Achilles tendonitis

The Achilles tendon extends from the calf musculature and attaches to the heel.  Its attachment allows for the two calf muscles to control movements of the foot.  This tendon can become irritated and inflamed, which is known as Achilles tendonitis.   This can be extremely painful and prevent you from performing everyday activities or performing in sports endeavors.  Achilles tendonitis typically occurs when there is excessive stress placed on the lower leg and foot.  When the stress is experienced small tears can occur over time.  Athletes and performers, such as dancers, whose activities contain not only running and jumping, but also sudden starts and stops, are especially vulnerable to Achilles tendonitis.  It is also possible that a one-time incident, such as jumping, can cause this condition to develop.  Women wearing high-heeled shoes often develop a high risk for tendonitis because the position of the heels causing a shortening of the tendon itself.  Then when putting on a flat pair of shoes; for instance gym shoes, the tendon is being stretched further then its resting length in high heels.

Most injuries of the Achilles tendon do not result from recent acute injury, but as stated above, develop gradually over weeks or months. These are "overuse" or "misuse" conditions caused by excessive and/or repetitive motion, often associated with poor biomechanics.

Because of the association with poor biomechanics and Achilles tendonitis chiropractic care can be incredibly beneficial.  Realigning the joints of the spine, pelvis and lower extremities can take the stress back of the tendon and allow for the healing process to occur.  Continuing to keep the stress at bay with adjustments can also help prevent this from happening again.  If this is not taken care of the damage can worsen and possibly lead to a rupture of the entire tendon and surgical repair.  Getting adjusted can help to prevent further damage and prevent an injury to ever occur.
